Why Your Noisy Mind Won’t Quiet Down

So we’re going to take a quick second here, and just take a deep breath, and let it out.

The big question people have is, “I have a noisy mind, it just chatters, and chatters away; and what am I supposed to do about it? Especially if it’s critical, if it’s there all the time and it’s just stomping down on me. I want it to stop. It’s like my, my whole, my thoughts have been hijacked by, by a terrorist, and it’s just totally just like beating me down. Not only that, but it’s too busy. I can’t think about anything, keeps looping; keeps looping around and around, and I’m like, dude, just stop, just stop, but I, it’s like you’re laying in bed, it’s looping, it’s making stories. You just hang out, and laying, it’s making stories.” You’re just listening to me now, anytime there’s a pause that’s long enough, that story starts to build up momentum, and then starts looping, and looping some more.

Affirmations Work - Except When...

You might try to counter this with affirmations, saying positive things about yourself, “I am this,” and, “I am that,” except for the majority of the time is this looping, is this mental clutter; this criticism, this judgment about who you are, how wrong you are, how less you are than others, how you’re not enough. And so the small amount of time you spend on thinking positive, feeling good about yourself, it’s kind of like, say there’s a oil spill, right? And so then, then you put like a drop of like pure water in there, hoping that maybe that water’s going to like counter the oil spill, somehow.

Still Alive - Solving Problems The Thinking Mind Can NOT Solve

And so your thinking mind, your critical, noisy, hijacked thinking mind is thinking, “Dude, I am seriously helping this system out. We are still alive, we’re still kicking, we’re still going, we’re still rocking and rolling thanks to me,” the thinking mind. Even though you might feel like total crap at sometimes because it’s, of it’s looping noisy clutter; and guess what, as your mind focuses on these things, then you’re going to see more criticism, you’re going to see more failure, you’re going to see more rejection. So any change that you try to create in your life, you really can’t because you already have a story playing, and that story will continue to play, so you’re stuck.

Who Is The Puppet-Master?

The mind, the thinking mind has become the master of the system now, it’s story telling has become so predominant; it’s the puppet-master. If you’ve watched that movie, uh, Evil Dead; Bruce Campbell’s character, uh, his hand becomes alive, and, and he’s, he’s trying to stop it, and his hand is trying to kill him. Even though the hand is part of him, the hand, like the thinking mind, is a tool; but it’s, it’s very much like it’s, it’s there, and it’s like strangling us, it’s choking us. And so, here we are, we’re, we’re like wrestling with our hand. Meditation helps, so we, we put it back in perspective; so we can, we can properly use this tool.

Our System on Automatic

So here’s another good time, let’s take another quick deep breath here. And let it out. We go back to our breath because our breath is something we do automatically; we breathe in and out automatically. We know that our lungs, our respiratory system is there for our survival, and when we take a moment to look inside, and then just notice it, notice the breath, and feel the breath, then we’re actually bringing awareness just for that brief moment to something that’s happening automatically.

Taking Back Control of Your Thinking Mind

Just like if you watched The Hurt Locker, the bomb squad team there, he’s got to go in there, and he’s got to like pull out the trigger, pull out the detonator so that bomb doesn’t go off anymore; same thing happens when you start waking up to these automatic triggers in your life. First step though, is you’ve got to relax, you’ve got to bring it down. It’s kind of like if that dude in The Hurt Locker, again, the bomb squad guy, he’s all tense, and like he’s all like jittery, and the hands are moving everywhere, like his hand’s got it’s own mind, it’s trying to go and like de-bomb, or you know, pull out the detonator of the bomb there; wouldn’t work out as well. Once you start pulling out those triggers, then you can start waking up and start taking back control of your thinking mind, and becoming the master.

The Cost of a Noisy Mind

Patterns: Now’s a good time to take a look at the noisy mind, and taking a look, what are the patterns behind it, once you start noticing, “Hey, you know my mind is racing,” you notice there’s a lot of clutter in there, you know what, there’s, I’m triggered, I’m spinning, I’m looping; what do you start doing? What patterns start happening in your life?

Benefits: Now take a look of all the benefits behind that. Like I was mentioning, thinking mind really believes that it’s helping you, that this looping, that this critical thinking in the moment is actually keeping you alive. So what are the benefits behind that; how is that actually helping you?

Costs: And then after that, go, take a look at the costs, what, what are the costs for you avoiding those things, you know those triggers going off, and you, you running away. What’s the cost of having a noisy mind; of having a mind that’s critical, that’s pounding down on you? Maybe you’re not able to do what you want to do. Maybe you’re not able to fulfill the potential that you know you have. And so really take a look at those costs, and, and experience really, what is that, what is that costing you in your life?

Milestone 1: Quiet a Noisy Mind

So when we break it down, what we’re really talking about here, is taking back your life through meditation, using your meditation practice, not just to relax, but to take it to the next level where the thinking mind’s become the puppet master, but you can say, “Wait a minute, thinking mind. I think I’ll take over from here.” Through your meditation practice, you’re going to hit a few milestones; and milestone number one is being able to start from the noisy mind, spot a noisy mind, and quiet it down. With a quiet mind, then you can become grounded and centered, and then just like in The Hurt Locker, go in there and pluck those triggers, you know, find those emotional bombs, and then keep them from wreaking havoc, creating destruction in your life.

Milestone 2: Ending Destructive Behavior Caused By Destructive Emotions

So milestone two is it about ending the destructive behavior caused by destructive emotion. When we can go deep and dig out those root causes, when we can dig out those stuck, destructive emotions, then a thinking mind doesn’t always have to look at everything and say, “That’s a threat, I need to run away from that.” Doesn’t always have to keep bringing back past criticism, and bring it forward, like right now, past hurt, bring it right now, past loss, and bring it right now so that you’re stuck; you can’t do anything in your life anymore. We can keep the past in the past, then we can create the life that we want.
